How food actually becomes energy

You eat food. You feel energy. Here's what happens in between — the modern science and the ancient Ayurvedic understanding, side by side.

The big picture

Metabolism is every chemical reaction in your body that keeps you alive — breaking food down into fuel and building new cells from the pieces.

From plate to power — the metabolism journey MouthEnzymes break starches StomachAcid breaks protein + fat Small intestineNutrients → bloodstream BloodstreamInsulin helps glucose enter cells MitochondriaGlucose → Glycolysis → Krebs → Electron transport= 30–32 ATP molecules (energy!) ATP = Energy
Your body converts food into ATP — the universal energy molecule that powers every cell.

The three fuels

Everything you eat is made of three macronutrients — which we break down fully in our macronutrients guide. Each provides energy differently.

Your body's three fuel sources CarbsFast fuel→ Breaks into glucose→ Brain's primary fuel4 cal/g45–65% of diet ProteinBuilder + repairer→ Amino acids→ Muscle, hormones, enzymes4 cal/g10–35% of diet FatsDense energy reserve→ Absorbs vitamins A,D,E,K→ Makes hormones9 cal/g20–35% of diet

Agni — the Ayurvedic mirror

Thousands of years before we discovered mitochondria, Ayurveda described the same process as Agni — the digestive fire that transforms food into energy. When Agni is balanced, digestion is complete and energy is steady. When impaired, undigested residue (Ama) accumulates.

The four states of Agni (digestive fire) Sama AgniBalancedComplete digestionSteady energyClear mindIdeal VishamaIrregular (Vata)Bloating, gasFluctuating appetiteAnxiety TikshnaOveractive (Pitta)Acid refluxExcessive hungerIrritability MandaSlow (Kapha)Heaviness, lethargyWeight gainSluggish digestion
Only Sama Agni is considered healthy. The other three are imbalances treated through diet, lifestyle, and herbs.
🌿 Ayurvedic Tip: Eat your largest meal at midday when Agni is strongest. Avoid ice-cold drinks with meals. Eat sitting down. Leave space in your stomach. These align with modern circadian digestion research.
The bottom line: Whether you call it mitochondria or Agni, the message is the same — eat whole, unprocessed food, eat it mindfully, and your body will do the rest.
